How Cerium and Lanthanum as Coproducts Promote Stable Rare Earth Production and New Alloys

چکیده

The largest outputs of rare earth mining are the low-value byproducts cerium and lanthanum, which burden supply chains because they must be separated from more desirable earths used in magnet production. Promoting demand for lanthanum can potentially diversify economics improve chain stability all elements. A promising avenue increasing byproduct element is their use aluminum alloys; an application offering multiple benefits to manufacturing such as energy reduction improved throughput. Experimental materials science economic implications Al-rare alloys will discussed. We show that Al–La/Ce have elevated mechanical strength compared traditional alloys, some formulations without heat treatment, possess a highly castable eutectic microstructure. This report presents example how focused approaches technological development benefit stakeholders at every step

- Based Rare - Earth - Free Permanent - Magnet Alloys

This study presents the structural and magnetic properties of melt-spun , , and alloys. Appreciable permanent-magnet properties with a magnetocrystalline anisotropy of about 9.6–16.5 , a magnetic polarization –10.6 kG, and coercivities –3.0 kOe were obtained by varying the composition of these alloys. Structural analysis reveals that the positions of x-ray diffraction peaks of show good agreeme...

Bidentate nitroxide ligands stable toward oxidative redox cycling and their complexes with cerium and lanthanum.

We report the synthesis of 1,3-bis[(2′-tertbutyl)hydroxyaminophenyl]benzene (H2arene-diNOx) and its metal complexes, Ce(arene-diNOx)2 (1) and [(py)2K(18-crown-6)][La(arene-diNOx)2] (2). Electrochemical studies demonstrated that the H2arene-diNOx, bidentate nitroxide ligands significantly stabilized the Ce(IV/III) redox couple to −1.74 V versus Fc/Fc(+). Moreover, a reversible oxidation wave was...

Effects of the rare earth cerium on Escherichia coli.

The rare earth cerium was found to bind rapidly to Escherichia coli. Cerium inhibited oxygen uptake in the presence of glucose as well as the endogenous respiration of glucose-grown cells. For a cell concentration of 4 mg per ml, maximal inhibition was obtained at 120 mug per ml. Greater concentrations did not increase the inhibitory effect. Cerium inhibited (14)CO(2) evolution and (14)C uptake...

New Techniques for the Sunthhsis of Metals and Alloys, Ii. the Properties of Rare Earth Metals and Alloys

This investigation consisted of two parts. In part one, a High Rate Physical Vapor Deposition Process was developed for the deposition of metals, alloys, compounds and dispersion strengthened alloys. The relationship between the deposition temperature, the microstructure and the mechanical properties was studied. The materials resulting from this process were shown to have oroperties very simil...

Highly stable, mesoporous mixed lanthanum–cerium oxides with tailored structure and reducibility

Pure and mixed lanthanum and cerium oxides were synthesized via a reverse microemulsion-templated route. This approach yields highly homogeneous and phase-stable mixed oxides with high surface areas across the entire range of La:Ce ratios from pure lanthana to pure ceria. Surprisingly, all mixed oxides show the fluorite crystal structure of ceria, even for 10 lanthanum contents as high as 90%. ...
